The ancient town of Çatalhöyük located in south-central Turkey holds some of the oldest Neolithic art and sculpture. They had no roads or streets but walked on top of the houses and entered from the roof to side down a ladder.
The Çatalhöyük people buried their dead under the floors of their houses and sometimes the skulls were kept inside and painted to make them look alive. Art covered every surface of the town, depicting Intricate hunting scenes and geometric patterns in brilliant colours. When someone died, their family members would paint the walls of their house in their honour. Interestingly, they would dig up the skeletons and pass them around the community often giving bones to loved ones as gifts before reburying them and then painting more walls of the house.
