The Rainbow Meaning

Since the 1970s, the rainbow has represented pride for the gay community and later for the LGBTQ+ community. Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag to represent being visible, coming out and living in truth. It is used all around the world.

It is understandable that Baker used the rainbow as such a significant symbol. The mythology of the rainbow is ancient. In myths from around the world the rainbow is powerful and a connector between spirit and physical. The inner and the outer world. The earth and heaven.

Following are just a few of the world's many rainbow myths and representations.

The rainbow is the symbol of the Greek goddess Iris, a messenger between the heavens and earth just as the rainbow floats between the realms and represented hope.

The goddess Manzat is the personification of the rainbow in Mesopotamian and Elamite mythology. She was the goddess of a city's prosperity.

The Rainbow Serpent runs deep within many Australian Aboriginal myths and is a creator and destruction god.

To the Aztecs, Ix Chel is the jaguar goddess of birth and healing. Her name means lady rainbow. She is depicted wearing a serpent headdress.

Anuenue is the Hawaiian rainbow maiden who is a messenger for the gods Tane and Kanaloa.

Haitian Vodou (Voodoo) incorporates the serpent rainbow spirits in its practice.

Uenuku and Kahukura are the rainbow's personification to the Māori of New Zealand. They represent omens and are called on in times of war. Also their Moon goddess Hina used a rainbow for her mortal husband to travel back to Earth.

In Norse mythology, the rainbow bridge connects the Earth with the home of the gods. The rainbow bridge is only available to good and virtuous people, warriors and royalty.

In Chinese mythology, the rainbow is depicted as a dragon with its back arched to the sky as a rainbow. It too represented the bringing together of both the heavens and the earth.
